Weights and Measures Laboratory
In order to test commercial weighing or measuring devices, inspectors and service agencies must use accurate standards that are traceable to a higher national standard. The National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) provides oversight for all 50 state laboratories, insuring that the calibration procedures and the standards used by state laboratories meet national accuracy requirements.
The West Virginia State Measurement Laboratory is located in St. Albans, WV, and houses the state standards of mass and volume. This laboratory also maintains measurement traceability to the National Standards in Washington, DC. Highly trained and certified metrologists calibrate weights or measures standards that are used in commerce in our state, including those used by agencies that perform service on commercial devices. Calibrations are performed by appointment only, and charges apply to most tests and calibrations. To schedule a calibration appointment, contact Dan Mace at 304-722-0602.
