Weights & Measures Service Registration
It is unlawful for businesses to use weighing or measuring devices that have not been tested and sealed using certified and traceable standards. However, it would be unfair for businesses to wait for the limited number of state inspectors to test their devices each time service is performed on them.
The Service Registration program sets conditions for private agencies to perform service, repair or replace weighing or measuring devices and return them to commercial service until a state inspector can arrange to re-inspect the device. In order to qualify for this status, a service agency must have accurate and traceable standards and certify that each agent who performs work is trained in the applicable area of expertise. Although more notice is required for some installations, service agents are required to notify the Weights & Measures office within 48 hours of conducting repairs or service to devices. Additionally, agents must affix a registered physical seal to devices which prevents tampering until official re-inspection by Weights & Measures takes place.
